In this course we examine policies in the United States that aim to help vulnerable children and families, with attention to policies both at the state and federal level. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the current trends, policies and practice issues emerging in child protection, foster care, and adoption services. Attention will be paid to current and historical inequities in the enforcement of child welfare policy and the implications for families from marginalized communities. Students will be asked to select a topic of interest within child welfare policy and will develop their knowledge around this topic area/policy throughout the course culminating in a policy brief.
