The Mindich Fellowship provides you with an opportunity to explore the profession of education. This course functions as a companion to the fellowship. Our primary goals are to provide an opportunity to think about how educators are not just autonomous actors but work within a complex system. We will work together to develop a nuanced understanding of the multidimensional influences impacting schools from the micro-level processes, such as a teacher’s individual beliefs, to local-level practices within a school, to the macro-level policies mandated at the state or federal level. We will take a systems view of the profession to explore how the complex system of education shapes educators’ life and work. While exploring two questions?

What exactly do children need to know and be able to do to succeed as adults?

How can educators improve students’ outcomes by harnessing the best ideas drawn from research, practice wisdom, and policy?
